Residing as a coastal road on the East of Georgetown and named after Sir Frederick Weld, Weld Quay, also known as Pengkalan Weld, was built between 1883-1889 soon after the land reclamation that took place on the Eastern Shore. Once Weld Quay had been completed in the late 19th century, the neighbourhood had turned into a Chinese Trades Neighbourhood which compiles of warehouses and wholesalers.
When in Weld Quay, one must not miss the chance to visit one of the six waterfront settlements, otherwise known as the clan jetties which comprise of wooden houses on silts. Chew Jetty is the most well-known amongst the clan jetties, well-liked for the ‘culture warp’ feeling when walking towards the sea.
Travellers who would like to stay in a hotel within this UNESCO heritage site can stay at the Royale Bintang Penang, which is within walking distance and provides easy access to all of the famous heritage sites.
For the photo-taking enthusiasts, there are two 3D trick art museums in Weld Quay, Penang Amazing World Studios and Made in Penang Interactive Museum with majority of the art featured being inspired by Penang and Malaysian culture.
If you’re craving for more of an Asian style cuisine, Hai Nan Town, located by the sea provides a variety of Nyonya and Hainanese dishes to indulge. Take a stroll by the roadside of Weld Quay to find a popular Malaysian dish, assam laksa or some O Kio for dessert in front of All Season Car Care Centre.
Penang Island Ferry Terminal provides transportation on a regular basis to both vehicles and commuters that are journeying to the mainland. A ferry service to Langkawi is also available at Langkawi Ferry Services if you fancy a trip to one of Malaysia’s beautiful islands. Along Weld Quay, Swettenham Pier is an international cruise terminal that has been visited by grand cruise ships from all over the world and is only a short distance away from the iconic Victoria Memorial Clocktower.

Kimberley Street was named after John Wodehouse, the Earl of Kimberley, who was the British colonial secretary in the 1870s. The road was created in the late 19th century and was populated by Teochew immigrants from the Swatow Province, who made bihun (rice noodles) and mee suah (vermicelli), drying them in the open. Until today, this...

Dying Trades In George Town

As living heritages themselves, these people are part of the cultural richness of George Town against the backdrop of architectural heritage. Make your heritage trail complete by visiting them before these trades fade away. 1. Thana’s Goldsmith Fourth-generation goldsmith M. Raju is the last of his kind in Penang. With a sharp eye for detail, a pair of steady hands and his trusty tools, Raju carries on the time-consuming process of shaping gold into elaborate jewellery. Don’t you dare miss out on the last of custom-made gold trinkets Penang has to offer! 2. Songkok Maker On King Street, Haja Mohideen works his fingers to the bone at the sewing machine tucked away in a quaint little shop. A trade passed to him by his father, he keeps the custom of hand-made songkoks (a stiff cap worn by Muslim men) alive with the assistance of his son-in-law. 3. Signboard Maker Inherited from his father who was from Guangdong, China, Kok Ah Hwa shoulders the family legacy of...
