Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm

Introducing Entopia, the new Nature Learning destination in Penang.
By sharing knowledge about the natural world – both seen and unseen, Entopia hopes to inspire people to experience nature in a new way.
Entopia is the reconstruction of the once Penang Butterfly Farm, that is situated in Teluk Bahang.
“We turned the old facility from approximately 30,000 square feet to now over 100,000 square feet in Phase 1 of our development (2015-2016). And after our opening, the continuation of Phase 2 which is scheduled in 2019, will eventually reveal an expansion to approximately 140,000 square feet of facility,” said Joseph Goh, the Chief Executive Officer of Entopia.
Soon to be a very prominent landmark in north of Penang, it will boast one of the largest green-wall in Malaysia, whereby its building facade will be pocketed by thousands of plants covering over 20,000 square feet of wall space and measuring over 180 metres in length.
Within Entopia lies two new worlds; The Natureland & The Cocoon.
The Natureland, which is a living garden vivarium, is a shared ecological space for a variety of animal species especially insects, invertebrates and small reptiles living in their re-created natural habitat. This will be the largest butterfly and dragonfly garden in Malaysia with more than 15,000 butterflies flying at one time. The living garden will feature more than 200 species of plants, fresh waterfalls, ponds, visitor trails, caves and other artistic and surreal garden features.
The Cocoon, which is an indoor discovery centre, features two floors of learning exhibition and indoor activities. The Cocoon is designed to allow visitors a self-exploration of invertebrates through various interactive edu-stations.
Besides the walk-through experience, visitors will also be guided by its nature specialists to participate in fun hands-on learning activities. The entire Cocoon itself is also the state-of-the-art facility whereby the visitor experience will be accompanied by technology guided interpretation.
Some of its other exciting attractions within include the Mystery Cave, Montane Pass, Tiger Trail, Pandora Forest, Downtown Entopia and Breeding Ground.

The Peacock Who Lives in a Pool

Golden Sands Resort, Penang by Shangri-La has recently carved its name into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for constructing the ‘largest floating kolam (mural) in a swimming pool’. Measuring over 600 square metres, the floating mural (kolam) is a record-setting attempt is a giant jigsaw puzzle made from 47 pieces of lightweight material and applied with sticker glue before sprinkled with coloured dry coconut flakes. Associated with Indian culture and Deepavali – the Festival of Lights, it featured a beautiful peacock with resplendent feathers surrounded by lotus flowers with the ‘S’ logo made purely of rock salt which took 117 hours, 100 volunteers over 10 consecutive days. The peacock was made from 87 bags of recycled coconut flakes weighing 437 kilograms, 37.9 kilograms of glue and 5,000 bulbs of fresh pompom chrysanthemums floating freely on the water surface of the resort’s biggest swimming pool.
