So, you have heard that Penang is a heaven for great and awesome food? Here is a check list of some of the must-try local delicacies to drive your taste buds crazy!
Curry Mee
Thin yellow noodles or/and rice vermicelli soaked in spicy curry soup base with sambal and coconut milk. Thrown in is a handful of cockles, prawns, cuttlefish, dried tofu, chicken meat slices topped with mint leaves….yums!
Wantan Mee
Handmade yellow noodles served in thick black sauce or hot broth topped with steamed/deep-fried meat dumplings (ground pork and shrimps wrapped in thin dough), sliced roasted pork or chicken and leafy vegetables. Delicious in either dry or soup form!
Nasi Kandar
Rice will never be the same again after savouring this! Accompanied with many choices of curried dishes, meats, seafood and vegetables cooked in the typical Indian-Muslim style. A mixture of curry gravy is poured on the rice to impart a diverse taste to it.
Nasi Lemak
Fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and served with fresh chilli sambal, fried fish/shrimps, deep-fried anchovies and egg. Usually found wrapped in banana leaves and newspaper, it goes best with a good ol’ cuppa joe!
Koay Teow Th’ng
Delicious flat noodles served with fish balls, shredded chicken and fish cakes in sweet clear soup (usually boiled with chicken or duck bones). Try the shop named Pitt Street Koay Teow Th’ng at Carnarvon Street, where the stall uses eel meat to make eel balls with their servings.
Cendol
Those who have tried claim it is the best bowl of sweet delicious pandan-flavoured green jelly strips. A dessert to savour especially on a hot day. Mixed with “Gula Melaka”, kidney beans, coconut milk and buried deep within shaven ice.
Laksa
Round white noodles soaked in a thick fish broth with a variety of finely chopped local salad leaves and herbs, dashes of sauces and condiments. Either assam laksa (sourish) or nyonya laksa (with creamy coconut milk) has a unique taste to enjoy.
Hokkien Mee
A combination of yellow and rice noodles in a hot bowl of delicious red hot spicy soup boiled with prawns, dried shrimps, and pork ribs, garnished with bean sprouts, water spinach, sliced hard boiled eggs and pieces of roasted pork.
Ban Chang Kuih
A type of Chinese pancake, what makes it special is its simple toppings of butter, finely ground peanuts and brown sugar. If you opt for more varieties, check out other toppings on the menu like cheese, ham, bananas and even chocolate sauce!
Popiah
Popiah are spring rolls stuffed with bean curd, eggs, turnips and lettuce, categorised into two types: dry and wet with the skin made from eggs and flour. Try the seafood popiah at Gerai Padang Brown with extra crab meat inside.
Char Koay Teow
Usually comes with shrimps, cockles, bean sprouts, sweet soya sauce, duck eggs and sprinkled with freshly cut spring onions to add to the delicious aroma. These golden stir-fried flat noodles are considered as Penang’s signature.
Rojak
An assortment of all kinds of local fruits and vegetables like guavas, cucumbers, green mangoes, pineapples, jambu air and Mexican turnips topped with salty thick tangy black sauce, not forgetting that generous sprinkle of finely ground peanuts!
